The downside to traveling

I love to travel. In my next life I want to come back as a travel writer and blog about all the places I have visited free of charge! With travel there is very little to complain about but if I had to choose I would find 2 challenges with exploring the big wide world.

The first is my hair. For those that have known me after the hair straightener was invented you would think that I have perfectly groomed straight hair that looks pretty presentable most of the time. For those that have known me for a long time you'd know that my hair is a frightful curly mess that has a mind of its own. During a summer holiday I can generally hide it under a big hat and it's mostly wet so I can tame the beast without too much trouble. For this trip I risked not taking a hair dryer ( more room for running shoes) and I thought I could manage it nicely under a beanie. It turns out my hair HATES the snow and isnt too fond of a beanie either. The minute snow hits my hair it drizzles and curls up into a tight spring.  I always imagined that a beanie would work like a hat to cover the dreadlocks but it's not working.  The other gripe is the hotel hair dryer.  I have written about this before but for this trip it's been a game of find the hair dryer. At the current hotel it's tucked neatly away in a bag that's someone in this room.  It's like a treasure hunt but the challenge is to find it quick before the curls take on a mind of their own.

The second challenge especially travelling with kids is the washing.  When people relay their recent trips and talk about the wonderful place they stayed in that had a kitchenette and washing machine.  I smile sweetly and think please no that's not for me.  A holiday is not sleeping in a room where I can see the kitchen or the laundry. The downside of this is not having the ability to wash, I simply cannot hand over a pair of dirty socks and pay $5 for a fresh laundered pair.  So it's the bathroom sink to wash the smalls and to make sure that the kids and adults are very good at recycling the bigger ticket items. Georgie declared that she couldn't wear her jumper anymore as she had worn it 5 days straight.  this was not true and it didn't have any visible stains so back in the clean pile.  When things get desperate there's always more shopping that can be done which is cheaper than the hotel laundry.

This christmas I got the perfect present no Tiffany's or iPhone 6 but a clean tshirt ....who could ask for more.

  1. Hodgo. Best travel tip,for USA. Go to see concierge and ask them to organise washing for you to be done by local laundry - not the hotel laundry. We got 2 very full bags done at a time for around $35 - no more smalls in the sink. Even with a tip it works out way cheaper - you'll always find someone to do it for you when you explain you have 3 kids and lots of wahsing!!
